Our firm, our people, our values
A practice built around the families it serves.
Sulam Sayang was established to fill a quiet gap: families in Johor Bahru who needed legal help but found the process cold, rushed, or difficult to follow.

The name Sulam Sayang — a Malay phrase stitched with affection — speaks to how the firm approaches its work. Law, like weaving, is a disciplined craft. Done well, it holds things together; done carelessly, it unravels what matters most.
The firm was established in Johor Bahru to serve families who found that the legal process too often moved at a pace or in a language that left them feeling like bystanders. We set out to change that — to work more slowly, more plainly, and more personally.
We handle three areas of family law: pre-nuptial agreement drafting, applications for variation of maintenance orders, and comprehensive reconciliation or separation planning. We do not try to be everything to everyone. By staying focused, we are able to bring our full attention to each family we work with.
Our office is at Wisma Lentera on Jalan Sutera, a short walk from the Johor Bahru city centre. Clients are also welcome to call or arrange a video conversation if that is more convenient.
Our Mission
To help families in Malaysia navigate legal matters that affect their daily lives — with patience, respect for their pace, and language they can actually understand.
Our Vision
A legal practice where clients feel genuinely heard, where documents are written for people rather than for courts, and where the experience of dealing with a solicitor feels humane.
Our Values
- Discretion in all client matters
- Plain language in every document
- Unhurried, respectful engagement
- Honest advice, even when difficult
- Whole-family consideration
The People Behind the Practice
We are a small team by design. Every client works directly with a solicitor, not a paralegal or junior clerk.
Nurul Najwa binti Ismail
Principal Solicitor
Called to the Malaysian Bar in 2011, Nurul Najwa has spent her practice focused on family matters. She leads every client engagement personally and oversees all documentation.
Ravi Arumugam
Associate Solicitor
Ravi joined Sulam Sayang in 2018 after several years in civil litigation. He handles maintenance applications and court hearings, and is known for his composed manner in proceedings.
Lim Wei Ling
Client Liaison & Legal Executive
Wei Ling coordinates client communications, schedules consultations, and ensures that every family receives timely updates. She is often the first voice families hear when they reach out.
Standards We Hold Ourselves To
These are not items on a compliance checklist. They are habits that shape how we work every day.
Malaysian Bar Registration
All practising solicitors at Sulam Sayang hold current Annual Practising Certificates issued by the Bar Council Malaysia.
Client Confidentiality
All client information is held in strict confidence in accordance with the Legal Profession Act 1976 and our internal data handling protocols.
Clear Fee Agreements
Before any engagement begins, we provide a written fee agreement in plain English. No adjustments are made without prior discussion and consent.
Regular Communication
Clients receive written updates at every stage of their matter. We do not let files go quiet. If there is nothing new to report, we say so.
Child-Sensitive Approach
In any matter that affects children, we follow guidelines aligned with the Child Act 2001 and consider the child's wellbeing throughout our advice.
Continuing Legal Education
Our solicitors attend CPD programmes through the Bar Council and relevant professional bodies to remain current on family law developments in Malaysia.
Family Law in Johor Bahru — Our Approach
Family law in Malaysia touches some of the most personal decisions a person will ever make — who holds financial responsibility after a marriage, how parenting arrangements will work, what happens when circumstances change. The law provides a framework, but it cannot tell a family what matters most to them. That is something each family has to work out for themselves, and our role is to help them do that clearly and carefully.
Sulam Sayang operates within the civil court jurisdiction of Johor, handling matters that come under the Law Reform (Marriage and Divorce) Act 1976, the Married Women Act 1957, and related provisions of Malaysian family law. We do not handle Syariah-jurisdiction matters directly, but we are familiar with how civil and Syariah jurisdictions interact and can help clients understand which forum applies to their situation.
We are a small firm, and we intend to remain one. Our three service areas — pre-nuptial agreements, maintenance variation, and reconciliation or separation planning — were chosen because they represent moments where thoughtful legal work makes a lasting difference to family life. We take each engagement seriously, and we bring the same care to a RM 360 agreement as to a RM 985 family plan.
Johor Bahru is a city where families of many backgrounds and traditions live alongside one another. Our team reflects that — we work comfortably in English and Bahasa Malaysia, and we are attentive to the cultural dimensions of the matters we handle.
We would be glad to hear from you.
An initial conversation is simply that — a conversation. There is no obligation, no sales pitch, and no time pressure.
